The Family
Alfred Howse was the last lock keeper
at the Basin.

He became lock keeper c.1880.

Alfred sent Anne many Valentines Day
cards before they were married.

Anne Prudence Smith was his wife.

They had eight daughters and three sons.

Family get togethers were regular occurrences at the
basin, fancy dress was popular.

The River Churn was a regular bathing place.

Even the youngest enjoyed the river.
